Tsubo-ya
壷屋和菓子店
Tucked along a backstreet near Nakano Station, Tsubo-ya offers unpretentious traditional sweets, from gently sweetened ohagi and mame daifuku to glazed mitarashi dango, seasonal sakuramochi, and sekihan.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Glazed in a sweet-savory tare sauce over lightly charred surfaces, mitarashi dango offers an easy, comforting snack between everyday errands, striking a memorable balance between soy sauce and sugar. Situated on a side street near Nakano Station, Tsubo-ya presents a counter lined with modest Japanese confections.
Longstanding favourites include ohagi and mame daifuku, both made with restrained sweetness so the natural flavour of the ingredients comes forward. The red bean filling—available in smooth koshian and coarse tsubuan varieties—has a moist texture and clean sweetness that leaves a pleasant finish. Affordable dorayaki, kintsuba, and steamed manju buns are also available, making suitable treats for home tea time or small souvenirs after a show at the local theatre.
The lineup shifts with the calendar, bringing out seasonal treats like spring sakuramochi and kashiwamochi alongside colourful jo-namagashi. Beyond confections, the shop meets everyday community needs with freshly steamed sekihan—beloved for casual lunches and gifts—and celebratory issyomochi rice cakes prepared to order. Open from morning through evening, it offers a warm, welcoming stop to pick up a paper-wrapped parcel of sweets while strolling through Nakano.
